Language and Speed
Language
|
Figure 7. The Language report can
highlight potential for localizations. |
The Web may have first become popular in the United States, but it is
growing more rapidly in other countries now. If you are marketing to
international visitors or want to start, you should consider localizing your
site for different languages. Before you start hiring translators and building
new web pages, you need to know which languages are most important. The
Language report lists the percent of hits for
each language that your visitors have configured their browsers for. If the
sampling of hits for browser features is good, then this estimate of the
languages usage of your visitors can help you decide whether you should localize
your site and which languages to start with.
|
The Language report was added in Summary 2.1 and requires an update to the
JavaScript on your web pages. If you upgraded Summary from a previous version
be sure to change the JavaScript on your web site as describe in the
Summary Manual.

Load Speed
|
Figure 8. Use the Modem Speed report to
determine how lightweight to make the graphics. |
Another important factor in site design is load speed. If a page takes more than
eight to ten seconds or longer to load, you can bet most of your visitors will
not come back (or may even cancel loading). Some web servers records the
transfer time of each request in the logs. For those that do, Summary can build
a modem speed reports, like Figure 8, that shows the distribution of your
visitors by connection speed. If your visitors tend to have slow connections you
can use the Requests by Bytes reports to see
which files on your site are largest and focus on reducing the size of
those.
If you do not have transfer time in your logs and your web server will not store
it, you can still see what your site looks like on a slow connection. With
Summary Plus and SP, you can use the Modem Proxy tool to get a feel for what
your site is like at slower speeds.
