[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] [Summary-Talk] running summary on port 80 as other than root
Is there any way to configure summary so that it is started as root (so that it can run on port 80), but then it runs as some other user (similar to how we configure apache to run as, say, "webserve" or even "nobody")? We want to support those of our users who are behind firewalls, but we don't want to go crazy and set up a proxy server just for this one issue. It is easy enough to set the user launching the application be whomever we choose, but only if the port used is above 1024 (only root can set applications to use ports under 1024). But if we have root running the application, then there is a security issue that we're trying to avoid. ari -- Ari Davidow Applications Administrator, Web Central Tufts University 617-627-4291 / cell: 617-413-0425 ari.davidow@tufts.edu ------------- Go to <http://summary.net/list.html> to update subscription info.
