You will occasionally see "processing can't reacquire database" messages
for a few minutes, but then they should go away and everything should
proceed normally.

One possibility is that you are running out of physical RAM and are
swapping heavily. That would turn a short intteruption into a "grinds to
a halt". You should always have more physical RAM than Summary says it
is using on the Program Status report.

Other than that I would need more information to make a guess about what
is happening.
