if your client's ad is placed by an ad syndicator like doubleclick, 
overture (RIP :P), or google adsense, then that ad syndication company 
is in the best position to provide metrics like impression and click counts.

otherwise, the ad link needs to at least redirect through your site so 
that it hits your server when it's clicked. otherwise, if it links 
directly to the external site, your server will never see the ad clicks, 
so you won't be able to provide clickthrough metrics.
